I consistently print out a wide variety of worksheets covering all subject
areas but the worksheets don't track current lessons and assignments, and
therefore may place these students at a huge disadvantage during
standardized testing. The worksheets that I provide also do nothing to
let them know where they'll be when they return to the classroom. So for
extended stays the students go in blind. Most students are able to
complete assignments without assistance when they receive them. I assist
them when they have problems.
Daily character education is provided in written and verbal form. Rules
are very strict with no talking, no walking, no communication with other
students, etc. without permission. Students are accompanied to the
lunchroom as a single group and eat when no other students are in the
cafeteria. They are not allowed to talk during lunch either. Fun is not
part of the process.
I'd feel less guilty if our traffic weren't so heavy, and with so many 3
day ISS determinations. The frequent flyers are missing a lot of
education. I will say that we're always working to improve the process,
and we have a good disciplinary team as well as many other great
staff...the main concern that I have is the failure to receive
assignments, and the inability to get teachers and administration to
appreciate the potential, long-term damage related to the education of the
child...particularly, cumulatively to the frequent flyers.
