Are residency requirements commonplace? I find it a tad over the
top.
Are there unions in your area that can address this? Do people
really find it okay?
In my division we have a teacher's bill of rights (which also covers
administrators) which clearly states that a teacher cannot be
discriminated against based on where they live and that they have a
right to choose.
Over two decades ago, when I first started, I was a sub (subs are
part of local unions here) and the division would not call me as my
phone number was long distance and they wanted subs "in the area."
I talked to the union and I got toll call forwarding so I paid the
charges. The division then reiterated that they wanted "local
subs." (I was closer to the division than others in the city, but I
happened to be just outside the local calling area.)
Again the union stepped in and reminded the division they could not
discriminate. If I paid the charges and where I lived did not
impact negatively on my ability to do the job (which it did not as
my drive was shorter than many IN the city) then they had no basis
to exclude me.
Twenty two years later I work full time as an administrator in that
same school division.
I know it doesn't help the original poster in his dilemma, but I was
interested in the thoughts of others on such a policy. It seems
pretty discriminatory to me. Don't individuals have a right to the
freedom to live where they want? Do lots of divisions insist on
such things? Don't the unions step up?
