Can a Superintendent approve a principal’s request to use
excess money from the budget that was originally allocated
for hiring new teachers to be reallocated and used for the
hiring of additional teacher aides or does it need school
board approval?
I am student in an administrative program and I was asked
to respond to the following scenario:
As principal how would you reply to receiving the following
letter from a PTA president?
Dear Principal X,
“A review of your budget request that was recently
published in the local newspaper reveals a point of related
interest. The amount you requested for new teachers was
based on teachers starting at a higher salary level than
that of a new teacher. This means that your budget will
have additional funds that may be utilized in other areas.
We would like you to consider using that excess funding for
the hiring of additional teacher aides. As you are well
aware, teacher aides represent a direct link to our
community (the four existing teacher aides on staff all
reside in our community). They also represent a more
equitable distribution of minority staff given that the
present staffing is not representative of the community of
your school. We hope you will consider our recommendation
and eagerly await your response.
