    [I would first repeatedly visit the classroom of
    the "offending" teacher unannounced, then - if necessary -
    have a kind sit-down talk with him/her alone. To draw in the
    complaining teachers to such a conference would only lead to
    squabbling and very bad feeling that would have to be dealt
    with later.]

    [How do I "maximize teaching standards" in subject-
    areas where I have no significant knowledge or particular
    competence? In the first place, I would not have hired a
    teacher who had not been thoroughly questioned in an
    interview, then placed on probation for six weeks during
    which period I would make oft-repeated unannounced visits to
    his/her classroom. If I saw that the teacher knew his
    subject well, controlled and interested the students - and
    interested me as a "student" - I would forget
    about "maximizing his teaching standards," for I would
    assume that he knew what was needed in his subject better
    than I. I believe in hiring the competent and then trusting
    them to do what is needed.]
