Questions that you could find answers to on the school website or
other accessible sources ("What grade levels do you have at this
school?"; "Who's the principal?")
Questions that demonstrate a lack of familiarity with teaching and
current trends ("Will I be likely to have to deal with any discipline
issues or students who are below grade level?"; "Will there be any
standardized tests given this year?")
Questions that indicate that you won't be a team player or that
indicate a resistance to following mandates ("I don't really have to
use the state-adopted language arts curriculum, do I?"; "Is it okay
if I use the weekly collaboration time to work on refining my M&M's
unit by myself?"; "I know you're a Reading First school, but can I
opt out?")
Questions that indicate you're looking to get by with the minimum
amount of work possible, or "in it for the money" ("Can I have prep
time at the end of the day so that I can leave early on Mondays,
Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays?"; "Can the watercolor classes I'm
taking at the community college be used to move me up on the pay
scale?")
It's hard to think of realistic examples to give you - but although
some of my examples are meant to be funny, I'm serious about the
things to avoid. Be familiar with current trends in education and be
as familiar as you can with the school. I've heard people
recommend "How are your state test scores?" or "Did your school meet
AYP targets?" as good questions to ask, but personally I'd even put
that on my list of things NOT to ask - I'm much more impressed if
someone can demonstrate that they already know the answer to that
sort of question - not everyone will know it, but the information is
publicly available.
I'm interested in hearing what others have to say.
