You are probably second guessing yourself because you are
nervous about getting the job. For me, this phrase would not
be the least bit offensive, nor would it prohibit me from
hiring the best candidate for the job.
I did one worse and still got a job, I referred to "African
Americans" in the community as "minority" when in actuality it
was white students that were a minority in the district as a
whole. I kicked myself the whole way home and thought I blew
it, but I didn't. It just made me more aware that I need to
phrase things more carefully in the future.
